Class Highlight CROSS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING with Jennie Pavlica

Do you enjoy weight training?  Have you always been a little curious about CrossFit, but not interested in lifting extreme weights?  If so, our Cross Functional Training class taught by Jennie Pavlica may be the right class for you.  This class gives you the opportunity to learn Olympic-style lifts with manageable weights for your body type.

If you pick up any health or fitness magazine you will find an article about the importance of weight training.   Practicing strength training as we age is important because it helps us maintain muscle mass. When we lose muscle mass, we lose strength, gain weight and become frail.   If you want to reverse these effects start weight training now, you just might be surprised by how quickly you see a change.

"At age 30, people who are physically inactive lose anywhere from 3 to 5 percent of their total muscle mass per decade.  After the age of 50, the rate of loss doubles.  This is the biggest reason why elderly people become frail, and, because muscle dictates metabolism, is the basic cause of weight gain." -Alicia Stanton, MD

Jennie's Cross Functional Training class offers a full-body workout that combines elements of weight lifting, cardiovascular improvement, core training, and much more to enhance overall strength and endurance.  Jennie does a great job of making high-intensity workouts extremely varied, which keeps it fresh and interesting.  The great thing about this class is that you can make it what you want.  Many students in class choose to take their time and learn how to do each technique properly to improve their overall form, flexibility, and strength.  Other students love that fact that they can get an awesome Cross Functional workout and compete with others or against the clock to achieve AMRAP (As Many Rounds as Possible) within a given time frame.

There is no need to feel intimidated to try this class; the workouts are all about basic exercises.  Jennie combines plyometric moves, body resistance, weight lifting, (manageable weights) kettle bells, and endurance exercise.  BUT the great thing about this class is that it is all about YOU and YOU doing it at YOUR fitness level for YOUR personal gains.  Jennie has also been fantastic about helping students (me included) with limitations or injuries.  Always talk to Jennie before class if you have any injuries and she will offer you modifications.

In addition to learning a whole new way to train, you will also get a whole new vocabulary in weight training.  Not to brag, but here are some new terms I can now throw around:  Thrusters, Snatch, Clean & Jerk, Double Under, Pistol Squats,  and High Pull.  –Always fun to learn something new!

Come check out the next WOD (workout of the day) and get involved in an invigorating class that teaches you the important fundamentals needed for proper weight training.

I hope you will join me.   – Kristina Shea
