Healthy Perspective by Maureen Shortt

Did you know that generosity has an effect on your body and your mind? You know the feeling of helping someone with their shoveling, or baking cookies for a school event? The feeling of leaving an extra large tip, or even just holding a door open for someone. Even when it is not convenient for you, when you make the time to help, you walk away with a good feeling.

Giving is its own reward. It is a natural state. You release endorphins, the 'feel good' chemicals, in your body and in your mind, when you open your heart and give of yourself, whether it is time or money. Your mind quiets and settles back into its home, your heart. You recognize at a deep level that you are meant to live within a flow of generosity, which is also a flow of happiness.

We have an opportunity to join together as a community of Solebury Club staff and members, to be generous, to cultivate those endorphins as a group, to join together in the joy of giving. On Saturday, May 9, we are hosting a fundraiser for Meghan's Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about the issues of combat veterans who experience symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   Veterans issues are prominent in the media right now. As a nation we do not take care of and honor our veterans as they deserve. They have given of themselves in ways that we cannot even imagine. I have realized that you do not have to have died to have given your life for your country. Having been in the horrors of combat, veterans come back as different people.

The event will be in the big field between the club and the post office. It is a series of fitness challenge stations that can be run in a timed team style or just for fun. We will have wonderful gift baskets of all types to be raffled (Great for Mothers Day, the next day) as well as speakers and a flag color guard.

Please check the details of the event. Would you like to be on a team? Would you like to volunteer? Do you own your own business and would like to sponsor one of the race stations? Want to create a basket to be raffled or donate an item to be included in a basket?

Click here for more information and to register for this event. As you do bear in mind the feeling of giving, and especially the feeling of giving to those who have given so much.

Namaste, Maureen
