Trainer's Tip

Tips to effectively work the glutes

squat"The glute muscles are essentially pushing muscles. Three key motions to help work this area are squats, lunges and step-ups. Running and rowing will certainly aid in strengthening and toning this part of the body as well. The kick in a sprint absolutely requires a conscious push with the rear, and to generate power on the rowing machine one primarily uses the quads and glutes.  Of course, all of these motions only help if done with proper technique. Due to an endemic of hip imbalances and instability, it is extremely easy to perform any of these motions in an unproductive manner. For safety purposes, start with step ups; test the height, use weights, learn about your leg and core strength as is. Whenever necessary, any trainer will obviously help guide you as well."  ~ Colin Kirts
